Smoothing Base Coat: Say Goodbye to Ridged Nails

5 min to read

Ridged nails, uneven surface, polish chipping too quickly… These small imperfections, although common, can turn your manicure into a real headache! Fortunately, you have an ally to get you out of this mess: the smoothing base. What is it for? When and how to use it? We tell you everything about this superhero who often saves our nails!

Key points:

  • The smoothing base (or nail ridge filler) is a treatment polish that evens out the nail surface, like a makeup primer.
  • It’s ideal for ridged or uneven nails — striations being an aesthetic concern, not a sign of a weakened nail.
  • It serves two purposes: correcting imperfections (smooth surface, shine even without color) and preparing the application (better polish adhesion and tenue).
  • At Manucurist, it’s Active™ Smooth, to be included in a 2-week treatment (Basic, Starter, or Ultimate).

What is a smoothing base?

The smoothing base (or nail ridge filler in English) is a treatment polish whose formula is designed to even out the nail surface. It acts like a makeup “primer”: it’s invisible but essential for a perfect finish, ideal when you have ridged or very uneven nails.

A solution for ridged or uneven nails

Striations are fine visible lines on the nail surface. Vertical or horizontal, they often appear with age, but can also be worsened by vitamin and nutrient deficiencies, mechanical damage (excessive filing, too frequent application of fake nails or semi-permanent polish and harsh removals), or health problems. All these events can disrupt the keratin production, with striations as medium-term effects.

Result? Nails appear dull, uneven, sometimes jagged at the free edge… However, this does not mean that ridged nails are weakened. Striations are primarily an aesthetic concern. A suitable manicure routine with a smoothing base coat is enough to visually erase these surface imperfections on the nail. Enough to bring back the smile, we approve!

What is its purpose in a manicure routine?

The smoothing base is a bit like a magic wand that ensures a flawless finish, worthy of a professional manicure, without leaving home. It has two main functions:

  • Imperfection corrector: it fills in irregularities and creates a smooth surface for a cleaner finish. Even without colored polish, the nail looks more radiant, neat, and even.
  • Preparer before polish application: like a base coat, the smoothing base acts as an undercoat that facilitates application, optimizes polish adhesion, extends its tenue, and prevents smudges and early chipping.

When and how to use a smoothing base?

The smoothing base easily integrates into a complete nail care routine. It is applied directly on well-prepared bare nails.

Active™ Smooth: the BFF of ridged nails

For a perfect manicure, with or without polish, we developed Active™ Smooth, a CC polish effect care polish that acts as a smoothing base. It deeply nourishes the nail and revitalizes it thanks to the regenerating properties of castor fibers, hexanal, AHAs, and vitamin E in its composition. Its slightly tinted formula comes in 4 shades (pink, beige, gold, and bronze) that subtly adapt to different skin tones.

💡Tip: discover nail layering by combining Active™ Smooth with other care polishes from the Active™ range to vary effects while continuing to strengthen your nails.

Smoothing base & ridged nail routine: the winning combo

Here are 3 intensive and adjustable treatment programs to be done over 2 weeks to smooth ridged nails. From the simplest to the most expert, choose the one that best suits your needs.

Basic Routine: simplicity & effectiveness

  • Week 1: apply a few drops of a nourishing oil such as Green Oil 2 to 3 times a day on bare nails, massaging the nail and its surrounding area.
  • Week 2: apply Active™ Smooth as a base layer 2 to 3 times during the week, without removing the previous layers. Continue applying a few drops of Green Oil 1 to 2 times a day, massaging the nail and its surrounding area, until removal. At the end of your treatment, remove Active™ Smooth with the dissolving Oil or an acetone-free remover like the Gentle Green Flash™ Remover.

Starter Routine: the intermediate option

  • Week 1: start by smoothing the surface using the lime preparer. Apply Active Smooth on your nails every 2 days, without removing the previous layers. Complete by applying a drop of Green Oil daily, gently massaging the nail and its surrounding area.

Ultimate Routine: the expert treatment

  • Week 1: smooth the nail surface with the Lime preparer. Apply Active™ Smooth on your nails every 2 days, without removing the previous layers. Complete by applying a little Perfecting Concentrate during the day (for example, in the morning) and a drop of Green Oil in the evening. After one week: clean and remove the layers of your Active™ Smooth, and do a SOS Mask to leave on overnight and peel off the next day.
  • Week 2: Repeat the program identically.

👉 The ultimate complete care to smooth dull and very ridged nails can be found in a complete set. For even better results, continue the routine for 2 additional weeks.

To summarize:

  • The ridges are fine lines (vertical or horizontal) linked to age, deficiencies, mechanical damage (excessive filing, semi-permanent or too frequent fake nails, aggressive removals), or a health problem.
  • They make the nail dull and uneven but do not indicate a weakened nail: it is primarily aesthetic.
  • A smoothing base coat is enough to visually erase these imperfections.
  • Its two functions: imperfection corrector and preparer (undercoat that optimizes adhesion, prolongs tenue, and prevents smudges and early chipping).
