Trending Nail Layering: we're adopting it!

7 min read

What if your nails deserved the same care as your face? With the nail layering trend, nail care takes on a whole new dimension. Inspired by Korean skincare and Japanese manicures, this technique is based on layering several coats of care products to protect and enhance the skin. Now, it applies to both nail care and nail art. We’ll explain it all in detail.

What is nail layering?

The concept of layering

Derived from the English term "layer", meaning "coat", layering involves applying layers of beauty products, or even fragrances, in a very precise order. The aim is to create a care routine that is as rich as it is personalised. While European rituals are most often minimalist, Asian rituals (for care) and Middle Eastern rituals (for fragrances) rely on layering to multiply effects and provide ultra-targeted care. The principle: each layer plays a specific role (hydration, nourishment, detox, etc.). Today, this trend is also used in manicures, both for nail maintenance and repair care, and in nail art to play with polish colours and effects for nails that shine right to the tips.

Combining layers of care products to treat nails deeply is the principle behind nail layering.

Origins of nail layering

Nail layering is rooted in Japanese manicure techniques. These focus on healthy, naturally glowing nails through the successive application of layers of nail polish and nail care. A quest for natural perfection seen with the clean nails trend, going hand in hand with a demand for practices that are kinder to health and the environment. At Manucurist, this new manicure trend comes naturally to us, as we have always approached nail care as a system of successive layers of care and/or makeup.

How many layers should you apply?

Traditional Japanese manicures follow a complete care protocol featuring a 3-product layering routine:

  • A nourishing paste enriched with natural active ingredients, applied with massage to strengthen the nail structure.
  • A mineral powder to polish the nail plate and boost its shine.
  • A plant oil to hydrate and protect the nail over time.

This 3-coat principle creates synergy between treatments, multiplying their benefits for the nail. Beyond 4 layered product coats, layering loses its effectiveness. The active ingredients in the final coats are blocked by the previous layers, so they have little effect.

Healthy nail routine

A healthy nail is a strong nail that grows evenly and without flaws. It still needs care to stay in great shape.

👉Our nail layering for healthy nails: for 2 weeks, apply Active™ Glow Raspberry in layers 3 times a week without removing the previous layers. At the same time, apply the Complete Serum twice a day and massage the nail and surrounding area to soften and stimulate healthy growth of the nails. As an extra step, apply the Perfecting Concentrate as often as you like, an easy-to-carry treatment to continuously strengthen nails and cuticles.

Ridged nail routine

Known as nail wrinkles, ridges can appear with age, a health issue, emotional shock or a lack of nutrients. The good news is, we have the solution to help you regain strong, smooth nails.

👉Our nail layering for ridged nails: for 2 weeks, gently buff your nails with the preparation file to smooth the surface. Then apply the Active™ Smooth care polish every other day in layers, without removing the previous coats. Twice a day, massage a drop of Green Oil into your nails and cuticles. Finally, 3 nights a week, apply the S.O.S. Mask in a thick layer and peel it off the following morning.

Damaged nails routine

Back-to-back gel polish applications with no rest time or in-between care, or even aggressive removal methods... The result: weakened nails that become thin, split or brittle.

👉Our nail layering for damaged nails: for 2 weeks (or even 4 if the nail is very damaged), massage Green Oil into nails and cuticles daily. Every other day, apply the strengthening treatment Keratin Booster to bare nails, allowing it to dry until fully absorbed. Finally, 3 nights a week, apply the S.O.S. Mask in a thick layer and peel it off the following morning.

Soft nail routine

Excess moisture, applying gel polish too frequently, pollution, or nutritional deficiencies: the causes of soft nails are varied, but it's not inevitable.

👉Our nail layering routine for soft nails: during the first week of care, apply the strengthening treatment Kératine Booster to bare nails every 3 days, allowing it to dry until fully absorbed. Massage nails and cuticles twice a day with a drop of Green Oil. During the second week, apply the Strengthening Base every 2 days in layers, without removing the previous coats. Continue applying Green Oil daily.

Active™ Layering

Always at the cutting edge of nail care innovation, Manucurist developed the Active™ range—unique formulas that are a hybrid between nail care and makeup, deeply treating natural nails while providing an enhancing finish.

Manucurist Active™ care polishes

Each Active™ polish applies very easily, without a base or top coat, dries quickly and targets a specific action:

  • Active Glow™ is a transparent care polish, rich in AHAs and sweet almond oil, that nourishes nails and gives them a glossy pink finish that can be more or less intense depending on the fruit extract chosen (raspberry, blueberry, grape, cranberry...). Ideal for maintaining healthy nails and regenerating them between polish applications.
  • Active™ Smooth is a CC Polish that smooths and evens out nails, an all-in-one perfector that blurs imperfections thanks to its formula enriched with castor fibres. The BFF of ridged nails! Available in 4 shades, it adapts to every skin tone.
  • Active™ Bright is a brightening care polish that strengthens and revives the nails’ natural whiteness thanks to its lemon extracts. Recommended to treat dull nails and strengthen soft, weakened nails.
  • Rich in beetroot extract with hydrating and antioxidant properties, Active™ Shine is a highlighter that brightens and repairs. Perfect for instantly boosting the radiance of damaged nails.
  • Active™ Plump is a care polish enriched with plant collagen and peach extracts that intensely hydrates and creates a plumping visual effect, with a pearly baby-pink finish.
  • Active™ Blur works like a perfecting filter that blurs imperfections and delivers a powdery pink soft-focus effect.

The Active™ range: all-in-one care polishes to enhance nails in one simple step.

How do you combine polish layers?

With Active™, nail layering opens up new possibilities. By playing with the number of coats of the same Active™ or combining 2 different Active™ products, you can adjust the make-up effect to suit your mood while enjoying the benefits of each formula. Smooth & Glow, Shine & Bright, Plump & Blur... it’s up to you to find your favourite mix & match.

⚠️Make sure to let each coat dry thoroughly and avoid applying more than 3 coats. The more coats you apply, the longer the polish takes to dry and the more likely it is to wrinkle or chip quickly.

Layering & nail art: the art of playing with effects and colours

Two-tone layering

By layering two coats of different-coloured polish, you can create unique, ultra-trendy shades. But you need to find the right mix, as not all polish colours work well together. We recommend pairing a first coat in an intense, highly pigmented colour with a second translucent polish colour with a glittery or pearly effect to add depth and radiance. We love Midnight x Mermaid, Hortencia x Mermaid or Hollyhock x Moon pairings, for example.

👉 You can achieve these two-tone layerings either with Green™ natural nail polishes or with Green Flash™ LED gel polishes, but make sure not to mix two polishes from different ranges.

Glazed, Mirror or Glitter layering

Applied over a base coat of Green™ or Green Flash™ color, effect powders make it so easy to achieve a trendy manicure. For ultra-icy Hailey Bieber-style Glazed nails, the White Glazed and Pink Glazed powders are absolutely fabulous. And to illuminate your nails like never before, the Mirror Effect powder creates a gorgeous chrome mirror effect. Over Red Velvet red nail polish, Milky White white nail polish, or Hortencia pink nail polish, a magnetic finish is guaranteed!

And to shine right to your fingertips and all night long, give in to the temptation of glitter layering with Manucurist biodegradable glitter. On a still-wet pigmented base colour or neutral shade, sprinkle the glitter in an even coat or a subtle gradient, depending on your mood. With more than ten glitter shades, you have plenty to express your creativity. We never get tired of it!

👉 Our tip for an impeccable manicure: remove powder or glitter residue with the dust brush before applying a coat of Top Coat to set your nail art.

For manicure lovers, layering is a natural go-to for both nail care and nail enhancement. Now, this technique holds no more secrets for you. All that’s left is to embrace the nail layering routine that suits your nail type and nail art desires.
